Hurricane Season Plumbing Prep for Miami Homes
Most Miami storm prep focuses on shutters and supplies, but your plumbing deserves a place on the list too. A little preparation prevents some of the most common post-storm calls.
Know your shutoffs
Before a storm, make sure you know where your main water shutoff is and that it actually turns. A corroded valve that will not close is a problem you want to find now, not during a leak.
If yours is seized, that is a quick fix worth handling before the season peaks.
Prevent storm backups
Heavy rain and storm surge can push water back through sewer lines toward the lowest fixtures in a low-lying home. A healthy, clear sewer line and, where appropriate, a backwater valve reduce the risk.
Clearing a line you already know is sluggish is cheap insurance before the rain arrives.
After the storm
If you lose water service, avoid running taps until pressure and any boil-water notices are resolved, to keep sediment and contamination out of your system.
If you see signs of a leak or a backup once water returns, call early; the first hours of containment decide how big the cleanup gets.
